Healthy joints are essential for your dog's mobility – they enable them to play, run and romp around without any problems. However, just like us humans, dogs can also struggle with joint problems over time – whether due to age, obesity or increased strain. The good news is that there are many ways to strengthen your dog's joints and prevent joint pain. We'll show you how you can keep your dog moving without discomfort with simple tips, natural home remedies and important nutrients.

01

Strengthen joints with the right nutrients

Early prevention can make a big difference: targeted nutrients help support your dog's joint function and maintain mobility in the long term. This keeps them active and full of life – at any age.

Even if symptoms are already present, certain micronutrients can help relieve joint strain and make movement easier again.

Glucosamine and chondroitin

Glucosamine and chondroitin are a proven combination for your dog's joint health. Together, they can support the natural function of the musculoskeletal system – for greater mobility in everyday life.

Glucosamine plays a role in the formation of joint fluid and cartilage tissue – both of which are important for keeping joints supple. Chondroitin supports the elasticity and resilience of cartilage, helping to slow down wear and tear.

As glucosamine is rarely found in the natural diet – apart from seafood – targeted supplementation can be useful. Chondroitin is mainly found in meat and seafood, but often not in sufficient quantities.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)

MSM is a natural sulphur compound that supports the formation of collagen, an essential component of connective tissue, skin and joints. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, MSM helps to reduce swelling and pain in the joints and promotes mobility. It can also support the natural healing process of tissue, which is particularly helpful for joint problems or after injuries.

Hyaluron

Hyaluron is an essential component of joint fluid. This fluid acts as a ‘lubricant’ and ensures that the joints can move smoothly and painlessly. Hyaluronic acid helps to maintain flexibility and protect cartilage from wear and tear.

Greenshell mussel

The green-lipped mussel from New Zealand is known for its special composition, which can specifically support your dog's joint function. It provides natural glucosamine, which the body can easily utilise – an important building block for the formation of joint fluid and cartilage tissue.

But green-lipped mussels can do even more: they contain a unique combination of omega-3 fatty acids, glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin and other bioactive substances that play a role in supporting cartilage structure and joint mobility. Their anti-inflammatory properties make them particularly interesting for dogs with increased joint needs, such as older dogs or those under high physical stress.

Omega 3

Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation and promote mobility, especially in dogs suffering from arthritis or other joint problems. Although omega-3 does not directly repair cartilage, it helps to make joints more flexible and less painful.

Omega-3 can be added to your dog's diet in various ways, for example through fish oil or salmon oil, which you can simply mix into their food. Oily fish such as salmon and mackerel are also good sources. Alternatively, there are special omega-3 supplements in the form of omega-3 drops or capsules, which you can also add to your dog's food.

Simple home remedies for healthy dog joints

Turmeric and ginger are tried-and-tested home remedies that can gently support the joints. Turmeric contains curcumin, an anti-inflammatory substance that helps reduce inflammation. Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes blood circulation, which is particularly beneficial for joint problems.

You can simply mix ginger into your pet's food or use it as a compress: heat a thumb-sized piece of ginger in vinegar water, allow the active ingredients to infuse and soak a cloth in the mixture. Gently place the cloth on the affected joint – this can relieve inflammation and promote regeneration. Turmeric is suitable in powder or drop form, but should be given regularly to be effective.

Heat can also be beneficial for joint pain. A warm, damp cloth or a hot water bottle (wrapped in a cloth) on the affected area relaxes the tissue. Make sure to choose a temperature that does not irritate the skin.

Everyday tips – what you can do to strengthen your four-legged friend's joints

Regular & gentle exercise

Regular walks, gentle play or even a swim can not only strengthen your dog's joints, but also provide a wonderful opportunity to spend time together. These simple but effective activities not only promote mobility, but also help to keep weight under control. And the best thing about it? You can both enjoy exercising every day and getting some fresh air.

Do's

Don'ts

Long walks

Fast stops

Swimming

Many rotational movements

Light play on springy surfaces, e.g. forest and meadow floors

Frequent stair climbing or jumping (especially for heavy dogs)

Regulate weight

Your dog's weight is crucial for healthy joints. Being overweight puts strain on the joints and can aggravate conditions such as osteoarthritis. Too many snacks also promote weight gain and put strain on the musculoskeletal system. If you are unsure, an individual diet plan, which you can draw up together with your vet, can help.

Check for injuries

Even minor strains or bruises can cause inflammation, which in the worst case can spread further. What initially looks like a harmless injury can develop into a more serious problem. Due to the pain, your dog may unconsciously tend to put incorrect weight on its joints, which can make the situation worse and lead to further problems. After all, pain is just as unpleasant for dogs as it is for us humans. It is therefore better to visit the vet once too often and have even minor complaints checked out.

Conclusion:

Unfortunately, joint problems are common in dogs, just as they are in humans. That's why it's worth supporting your dog's joints from an early age. Some conditions are genetic.

In such cases, it is particularly important to work with your vet to find the right combination of diet, exercise, medication and, if necessary, natural supplements. This will help ensure that your dog remains as pain-free as possible and stays active and full of life by your side for many years to come. BEST FRIENDS. DESERVE THE BEST.
